Man deciding between PasteItIn 1.8 and 1.9

PasteItIn Version 1.9 – Should I Upgrade from Version 1.8?

I have used TypeItIn since around 1999. Yes, it’s been around that long. And it’s still a fantastic app that I can’t imagine living without. I don’t remember when I first used PasteItIn. I know that I had a particular need for it and ever since I installed it, it has become as indispensable to my workflow as TypeItIn. I have introduced it to numerous companies and organizations as a consultant too.

Maintenance has expired on my TypeItIn 1.8 and I was debating whether to upgrade to 1.9. There doesn’t seem to be a way just add maintenance to an existing license, so I would have to purchase it all over again. I would gladly add years of maintenance, but I’m opposed to having to purchase a whole new license every 5 years. Maybe it’s just a matter of principle for me. I tried to find out what changed in PasteItIn v1.9 from PasteItIn v1.8, but I couldn’t find that information on wavget.com. So, I asked Claude 4.0 to read the user manuals for each and tell me what had changed. I was hoping to find a new feature that would improve my workflow. Instead, I found that it was just a maintenance release that added improved license management.

Here is the PasteItIn v1.8 vs. v1.9 comparison table that Claude 4.0 generated:

Personally, I’m going to wait until there is a release with new features that I can put into use. The two things that I would most like to see are:

  1. The ability to have more than one PasteItIn window display at once. I want the same thing for TypeItIn too. I guess that the big challenge with PasteItIn is figuring out how to handle which window would intercept new items on the clipboard. For me, that would work best if it was the most recently active PasteItIn window.
  2. A Regular Expression QuickFix. The built-in QuickFixes are probably helpful to some folks, but I could probably count on one hand the number of times I’ve used one of them. I could probably use them more than I do. I understand that the vast majority of users are not developers and wouldn’t have any idea what to do with a regular expression, but for those of us who understand them if would be quite helpful. But being able to do things like copy a FirstName LastName and have it automatically convert it to LastName, FirstName would be really helpful. This is just an example. I don’t remember the exact scenario where I really needed to run a regular expression against copied text. I think I might have written a PowerShell script for that one scenario.

There are probably lots more things that would improve my workflow, but these are two that I have encountered in the past. I will gladly upgrade as soon as some new features are added. Until then, version 1.8 is working great for me as it is.

P.S. If you read this Paul, thank you for creating great software that has enriched my computing experience, and that of many other people, over the years.
